With a party of around 26 participants, KIVI was warmly welcomed by Brabant Water and Hydreco on Monday 6 February. Presentations by Paul van den Berg (Hydreco on KWO) and Anton Voets (Brabant Water on WKD) were well received and made for a very lively and engaging evening. As an appendix to this report, the presentations can be found in digital form. Also the handout made available with the more general information about Brabant Water and the production location in Eindhoven (as explained by Rob van Kempen of Brabant Water and also KIVI board member for Mechanical Engineering South).

Description

Brabant Water is investigating how it can use the energy naturally present in drinking water pipes as a sustainable source of energy. The research consists of a number of theoretical studies (by KWR and TU/e) and a pilot project at Fontys in Tilburg (by Brabant Water, Hydreco and Fontys).

For the pilot, a WKD installation has been realised between Brabant Water's drinking water network and Fontys' cold and heat storage plant. The aim is to extract excess heat from the mains network in summer and store it in the KWO, so that it can supply additional heat to the Fontys building in winter. This technique can also be used to store cold from drinking water in the KWO for cooling needs the following summer. Hydreco is operator of the KWO at Fontys and will manage and monitor the WKD installation. Brabant Water is responsible for the drinking water side.

During a meeting at water production company Eindhoven, Brabant Water will present the design and realisation of the pilot. Following this, Hydreco will explain the role of KWO.

This pilot was partly funded by the Top Consortia for Knowledge and Innovation Grant (TKIs) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
