PV solar energy in Europe
Description
Electrical energy from sunlight. To this day, it still seems more of a promise than reality. Nevertheless, solar power is expected to be price competitive with traditional power from the grid by 2015. Despite favourable subsidy schemes, only 1% of electricity consumption was covered by PV systems in Germany in 2009. In the Netherlands, this is much lower. So why this optimistic expectation?
One of the main reasons for solar power eventually reaching the break-even point is the continuing price drop of modules sourced from China. The question is whether the Western European industry will be able to parry this.
We have found two companies active in the PV market willing to give their views on developments around PV energy. Solland solar producer of solar cells and modules and Smit ovens developer and supplier of systems for the production of thin film solar cells will explain the technology behind their systems and their market expectations during this evening.
