Steam engine KVL (Oisterwijk)
Description
On the railway line in Oisterwijk lie the desolate buildings of the former Royal United Leather Factories (KVL). The complex of the factory founded on 27 October 1916. At the time in the 1930s, it was the largest upper leather factory in Europe with over 1,200 employees at its peak in 1939. Because of the energy required for the tanning process (propulsion of tanning agents, necessary heating and drying of the hides), steam was the most obvious solution for this factory. As production continued to rise, it was decided to switch to electric drives as early as 1923. As Oisterwijk did not have electricity at the time, a 1300 hp steam engine with an 800 kVA generator was chosen as an interim solution. Currently, the steam engine and generator can be visited by appointment. The building in which the engine room is located has since been renovated and also serves as a reception area for various purposes and thus now also for this meeting. The steam engine and generator are undergoing further restoration. The current status will be explained during the visit and can then also be viewed by those present. In addition, the history of the complex will be explained by the enthusiastic volunteers of the Foundation Steam Engine Oisterwijk
