Stoomgemaal de Tuut , Appeltern
Description
The De Tuut steam pumping station in Appeltern was built at the beginning of the last century (from 28 August 1917 - 1 April 1919 to be precise) and for decades was one of the eight steam pumping stations in the Land of Maas and Waal that provided drainage. It was designed by the "Van Hasselt en De Koning" engineering firm from Nijmegen, the oldest engineering firm still in existence in the Netherlands, known today as Royal Haskoning.
In 1967, the pumping station was decommissioned and the work was taken over by the Bloemers diesel pumping station located a little further away. The Kromhout engines of this pumping station were replaced by electric motors in 2003 and the pumping station operates fully automatically.
De Tuut is the only one of the 34 steam pumping stations in the Gelderland river area that has been preserved. This happened thanks to the Baet and Borgh monument foundation, which bought the totally dilapidated pumping station from the polder district in 1984 with the intention of restoring it to its former glory. The restoration and operation of the pumping station is in the hands of the De Tuut Steam Pumping Station Project Group. The Baet en Borgh monument foundation and the project group Stoomgemaal De Tuut consist solely of unpaid volunteers.
Despite a chronic lack of money, especially in the years up to 1997, the Baet en Borgh volunteers, together with sponsors from the very beginning, managed to realise the highly necessary restoration work on the buildings. Thanks to the cooperation of the National Trust for the Preservation of Monuments, the chimney pipe was completely rebuilt in 1997 and money became available to complete the restoration. At that time, the overhaul of
was also started
The very enthusiastic project group proved willing to start up the Stork-Stumpf direct current steam engines during the KIVI NIRIA meeting.
Whether one of the two pumping stations (also made by Stork Hengelo) will be in operation depends on an operational test after the completion of alignment work.
There will also be a detailed explanation of the rest of the installation, not forgetting the technical details.
