On 2 December, KIVI was the guest of DH Industries. The company, which was founded in 1990, once began as Stirling Cryogenics and Refrigeration as a spin-off from Philips. After a few years, it was changed to DH Industries, with DH standing for the initials of the owner. DH Industries is now a global player with offices in New Delhi, India and Boston, USA. Through agents, business is done with different territories spread across all continents.

The afternoon began with a welcome with coffee. After everyone found a seat, the presentation by Francois Brouwers, international sales director at DH Industries, began. He told about the history of the company, what the structure of the company is and what kind of projects they participate in. After this introduction, the floor was given to Ronald den Heijer, owner of the company. He elaborated on the technology being applied (the reverse stirling engine) and discussed a number of current projects where DH Industries is applying its knowledge.

After the many questions were answered, the group was divided into three and the tour of the factory started. Here it was shown what the engines looked like inside and what tests are carried out on the engines. It led to much clarification and amazement about the working principle of the engines.

After the official part, Mr den Heijer carried out and demonstration on the possibilities and power of liquid nitrogen which mainly caused much relaxation and merriment among the participants. The afternoon ended with drinks where good networking took place.

All in all, the day gave many of the participants a new perspective on how an old principle (Stirling principle) is revived.

KIVI thanks DH Industries once again for all its efforts!

Nitrogen in a cup remains beautiful to even the most experienced engineers.
The boosting effect of a relatively warm (room temperature) copper tube produces an impressive result. It's like magic.
Emptying a bucket of water into a vat of liquid nitrogen produces a lot of nitrogen vapour as well as a mysterious effect.

Description

Do you also want to know how cryogenic technology is applied in practice? KIVI Mechanics offers the solution for you.

On 2 December, our department is organising a company visit for you as a member to DH Industries, a leader in cryogenic technologies. Specialised in developing and manufacturing stand-alone cryogenerators and closed-loop cooling systems, it operates with its brands Stirling Cryogenics and Cryogene in various markets such as Research, LNG & Biogas, Healthcare, Food & Beverage.

All aspects of the cryogenic process such as pressure, heat and physical flow, are determined and optimised by DH Industries. Unique is the specially developed CryoFan product to transport cold, ranging from 0.025m³/u @ 1m (pressure head) to more than 400m³/u @ 700m (pressure head). Based on the '(reversed) Stirling thermodynamic cycle', temperatures up to 10K (-263°C) can be achieved for the highly reliable and efficient Stirling Cryogenics products.
