Description

Date: 13 to 16 May 2010
The 'Cultural Excursion 2010' is just around the corner. On Thursday 13 May, a bus with alumni and students of the faculty 'CiTG', department of geotechnics, (v/h Mining and Petroleum Extraction) will leave for the Sauerland.

PROGRAMME

Thursday 13 May

At 1 pm, the bus will leave from the faculty CiTG with the first destination being Inden. Inden is home to RWE, a company which excavates 22 million tonnes of lignite per year in an open-cast mining operation. They will give a tour where a bus will allow a close look at the mining operations. Immediately after the tour, a delicious barbecue will be waiting for you at RWE's Grillhütte 'Haus Barbara'. When hunger is appeased, the bus will make its way to Meschede where the night will be spent.

Friday 14 May

In the morning we will visit 'Historischen Goldbergbau Korbach'. Here there is a gold deposit that was mined between the 1100s and 1617s. Many relics from this period can still be viewed. We will have a guided tour underground as well as a look at the museum and at watchtower the 'Georg Viktor Turm'.

In the afternoon we will drive to Lennestadt where Dr.-Ing. Bruno Heide is waiting for us. He will take us on a four-kilometre walk past mines and shafts. In the information centre, a lot of knowledge remains of the 140-year mining history in this area. Zinc and lead ore and pyrite concentrates were mined here until 1992.

After dinner at the same Lennestadt, we will let our bodies unwind in the thermal baths. Several pools, a diving board and a sauna will provide rest and fun in the early evening hours.

Saturday 15 May

We will leave early in the morning to go to Besuchersbergwerk Ramsbeck. Here we will disappear 300 metres underground on a 1.5-kilometre train ride. In pungels, we will get a tour of the mining galleries at a temperature of 12 degrees. Here we can see the original extraction sites of lead and zinc.

After a short stop in the idyllic town of Warstein at the local brewery for cool, clear refreshments and a guided tour, we leave Sauerland and head for the Ruhr region.

After a short bus ride, we arrive in Essen where we will visit Zeche Zollverein. This shaft tower including above-ground mining works is also called the most beautiful in the world and is also on the world heritage list for that purpose. We will have a guided tour appropriately titled 'Steigerführung'.

After this wonderful tour, the bus will set course for Dortmund where we will spend the night.

Sunday 16 May

Sunday is the day of the return trip. However, before leaving Germany and the Ruhr region, we will stop in Bochum to visit the mining museum and do some shopping in one of the largest and most extensive mining shops in the world.
