Description

The 'Caspar' lecture is the successor to the traditional Christmas lecture, which was traditionally held in December. The decision to move this lecture to January aims to give those interested some space in the busy festive month of December. What will be continued is the tradition of highlighting the cultural elements and backgrounds of mining during this lecture.

Friday 8 January is also the date of the emancipated Barbara drinks reception. The lecture is therefore an excellent occasion to invite your partner to travel to Delft together and combine both these activities.

This 'CASPAR' lecture will look back at the rich history of Limburg coal mining, and will discuss ongoing initiatives to restore and strengthen its role in the awareness of the general public.

Briquettes and Egg Coal: history is starting to come alive again!

It is encouraging to note that, in addition to an increasing intake into STEM education, interest in the study of mining science (Technical Earth Sciences) is also increasing again. In the coming decades, we will face a huge task in terms of increasing demands on energy supplies and raw material resources.

This makes it imperative that generations of motivated and qualified mining engineers are also delivered by education in the years to come. While interest in STEM education is stimulated from the government by various platforms, we also see that many (partly private) initiatives are being developed to open up the knowledge of (historical) coal mining in Limburg to the general public, and especially the youth.

Initiatives such as the website www.DeMijnen.nl and the Discovery Center Kerkrade ('Continium') succeed in giving the social context and the historical role of Limburg coal mining a place in contemporary education again. In addition, a wealth of historical information is rapidly being made available to interested miners.

In addition, the launch of the television series "Tien Torens Diep" based on Jacques Vriens' book of the same name should not go unmentioned. This series to be broadcast by AVRO from 24 January 2010 is about three children who have only one wish: to become coal miners....
