Description

On 8 May 1912, the Royal Decree establishing 'the department of mining engineering', signed by Queen Wilhelmina, was published in the Staatsblad (Dutch Bulletin of Acts, Orders and Decrees). With this, 'Mining' became an independent study programme within the Technical University of Delft (at the time), as it was split off from the department of chemical technology.
In 1912, the new department also moved into its own building: the 'Institute of Mining Engineering' at Mijnbouwstraat 120 in Delft. Over a period of almost 95 years, this building housed and educated about 2,500 mining engineers. Since 2005, the right half of the 'old' building has served as the Geological Museum and the 'Science Center Delft', and the other half is home to a number of start-up companies.
De Mijnbouwkundige Vereeniging also celebrates its 120th anniversary from 23 Nov. to 1 Dec. 2012, and the 'Mining' department of the Royal Institute of Engineers KIVI-NIRIA celebrates its 95th anniversary this year. In short: 2012 is a year full of 'Mining' anniversaries.
'Kick Off' Mining Jubilee Year 2012: 8 May 2012
In order to appropriately commemorate the 'establishment' of the independent Mining Faculty, a Mining Centenary Memorial will be organised, exactly 100 years after the publication of the signing of this by Queen Wilhelmina. This will formally launch the Mining Jubilee Year 2012 ('Kick-off'), with a host of other Lustrum festivities later in the year, including an Open Day on 1 December.
