'The 'Macondo' Blow Out': LESSONS TO BE LEARNED

'What went wrong, and what can we learn from it?

Explanatory note: On 20 April 2010, a 'blowout' in the Gulf of Mexico caused an environmental disaster of major proportions. Intensive efforts by oil company BP only brought this blowout (completely) under control on 19 September, after 5 months, with an expected damage claim of approx. USD 20 billion.

Members of the Mining Section of KIVI NIRIA and of the Mining Association held a brainstorming session on 2 July. through a brainstorming session at TU Delft about the proposal to BP from the 'Dutch Hurricane Proof Solution' team, members of the Mining Section of KIVI NIRIA and of the Mining Society have already contributed to (underground) solutions for this disaster, and drafted a number of recommendations that have also been sent to BP management for consideration.
On Friday 5 November, a follow-up meeting will be held in this context to discuss the research report now published by BP: 'The Deepwater Horizon Accident Investigation', which will focus in particular on how this gigantic 'blow-out' could have been prevented and, in particular, what oil and gas engineers can learn from it for the future.
