The Modern Mammoth Hunter (Christmas Lecture)
Description
On Wednesday, 26 November, the Mining Department will hold its Christmas Lecture, this year given by Dick Mol who will report on the recovery, research and reconstruction of the Yukagir Mammoth found in the frozen Siberian soil. There will be drinks after the lecture.
THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE YUKAGIR MAMMOET
Once again, a mammoth cadaver has been unearthed from the eternally frozen soil of Siberia. So what? An important find? Can we find out more about this famous ice age mammal? Yes, is the answer. This new find, made by schoolchildren in the far north of Arctic Siberia has been investigated by a large international team of scientists, led by Dick Mol from Hoofddorp. The research results, using high-tech provided a wealth of new data.
In his nearly 60-minute lecture, the speaker will briefly cover the evolutionary history of the mammoths and then give a detailed account of the four expeditions it took to recover the entire carcass. An account of the investigations and their results will then follow.
All the scientific data was used to reconstruct a life-like model of this mammoth, the so-called Yukagir Mammoth, by Remie Bakker, a visual artist from Rotterdam. The lifelike model welcomed more than 6 million visitors in Japan in a span of 6 months.
A lecture that features stunning and original photographs of the expedition, research and creation of a prehistoric mammal. Told in an engaging manner. More information at the website listed below.
