Description

First and only film screening in the Netherlands !

The year 1960 - a far northeastern corner of the Soviet Union, near the Arctic Ocean. In this vast 'territory' lies a settlement of prospectors. The country desperately needs gold after the war. The administration of 'the city' decides that the mission should be stopped. But project leader Ilya Chinkov is so convinced that there must be gold there that he manages to be allowed to continue searching for one more season. What follows is an adventure story about people who unflinchingly believe in an ideal and set everything aside for it: they bivouac in fur skins on a frozen lake, with wolves howling in the background, and they traverse an area of 500 square kilometres in three weeks with no facilities to conduct tests. The biggest attractions of the film are the nature and the cinematography: in beautiful widescreen and breathtaking shots, as a viewer you can almost feel the emptiness, the cold and the harsh conditions - but also the determination.

The film is based on Oleg Kuvaev's book Territoria from the late 1970s. It was a very popular book at the time in Russia, a touch patriotic. It was invariably in the backpacks of geologists going to work in distant and inhospitable places. The book has many characters and storylines; this is also reflected in the film.

The film will be concluded by a short presentation on working conditions in Salym/Siberia by Mr P.J.A. Lighthart. Mr. Ligthart is also the initiator of the screening of the film in the Filmhuis Delft
