Beset NVI members,

National umbrella the Dutch Women's Council NVR, with partner the European Women's Lobby (EWL), is organising a conference on the position of women in climate policy. With experts, and workshops: 'Voices of Change: Women & Climate Leadership'Conference, on 3 / 11, 10-18 h, The Hague

Although climate policies are decisive for future generations, decisions in these are made mainly by men. The substantial under representation of women in decision-making around climate change is striking.

Decisions are made for and about women(!) but not with them. Think of decisions on energy transition with a leading role for the technology sector , sustainable housing, sustainable food production and ditto transport and mobility. ICT (with AI) is a growth sector in which hardly any women are employed. As a result, this sector is not sufficiently aware of the implicit sexism and women-unfriendly behaviour in the workplace that causes women to leave.

This, together with the fact that women are still paid less than men for equal work, makes inequality worse.

Some climate policy sectors employ predominantly men. These are sectors that are generally more highly regarded, and in connection with this, financially more valued. While the sectors in which mostly women work have lower status - such as: biology, (natural) eduction, healthcare, social sciences - with salaries well below those in male-dominated sectors.

It focuses on the following questions: 1.What causes women to be heavily underrepresented in climate policy decision-making processes; 2.What are the consequences of this? ; 3.What are the societal .(and democratic) risks if women are not actively involved in climate policy decision-making?

Together with organisations from six EU countries, including NVR, the EWL is working on a project - supported by the European Commission - to draw attention to the

underrepresentation of women in decision-making around climate policy. A national event will be organised in each country in the period 2024 -2026. The conclusions and

recommendations will be presented in Brussels in mid-June 2026.

Yours sincerely ,
