How do (other) female engineers shape their careers and realise their plans? Would you like to hear inspiring stories about what it is like to start working when you have finished your studies? Would you like to spar with other ladies about what it is like to work in the engineering world? Then don't miss Women in Science on 10 March! During this event, three successful ladies will give their views on realising successes and career plans in this traditionally male world:

- Prof ing Jutta Arens, professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Twente.

Take one conscious breath in and out. This is exactly what approximately you unconsciously do about 20,000 times a day to supply your body with oxygen. In some cases, diseases and conditions can disrupt gas exchange in the lungs and become a life-threatening problem. When medical treatments, medication and artificial breathing cannot help, artificial lungs can be used as intensive care treatment.

To achieve realistic organ replacement with the development of such artificial lungs and other organ support is the goal of Jutta Arens, professor of biomedical engineering at University of Twente. Jutta collaborates with partners from the medical, natural and engineering worlds to highlight issues of artificial organs in contact with blood from different angles. As a researcher, she combines engineering and medicine to help patients safely and contributes to knowledge and developments for the approval and testing of artificial organs at both national and international levels. Jutta studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University in Germany, where she also completed her PhD and recently switched from head of the Department of Cardiovascular Engineering at RWTH Aachen University to the University of Twente in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. In her spare time, she likes to take deep breaths while enjoying long-distance walks.

-Ir. Marlou Bergboer, Business Opportunity Manager and Capital Planning Team Lead at Shell

As team lead of the Business Opportunity Managers and Capital Planning department, Marlou is responsible for managing a portfolio of around 400 projects at the Pernis refinery, including the development and underlying strategy of projects related to Energy Transition. She is experienced and accredited Project Manager with a proven history of working in the oil & gas / energy industry both nationally and internationally.

- Ir. Carla Kamphuis, Architect, designer, illustrator and author.

Carla Kamphuis is an Architect and works independently in her studio. She is also an author, illustrator and lettering artist. After studying architecture at TU Delft, she worked at a large architecture firm for several years. Yet she found that working for herself suited her introverted nature better. With her passion for design, she wants to inspire people. She enjoys combining her analytical business approach to assignments with a touch of her creativity. In recent years, social media has played an active role in her career plans.

We also have the Alice & Eve exhibition, showcasing the work and contributions to Informatics of ten women. This exhibition will travel past several academic institutions in the Netherlands over the next year --- KIVI is the first stop along the way! Prof Marielle Stoelinga will give a short presentation.

After the buffet, we will attend the 'Negotiation Skills' workshop, given by dr Aldis Sigurdardottir, CEO House of Consulting and assistant professor UT.

Did you know that women (on average) expect 30% lower salaries than men after graduation? Did you know that women receive about 30% less salary than men? Did you know that women are no worse negotiators than men, yet they tend to stay in? By attending this workshop, you will get the tools to help you get more of what you want and test your negotiation skills. This workshop will provide you with the fundamental basics of negotiation:

  • What is negotiation?

  • Importance of preparation

  • How to claim value?

  • How to create value?

  • Active listening

  • Gender differences

  • How to deal with difficult people
  • The importance of reputation

  • Understand the role of emotions in negotiations and how this relates to the outcome

  • Know how to become a great negotiator.

Programme:

16.00 h Walk-in with coffee, tea and cookies

16.25 h Welcome by the chairman of the day Esther de Bruijn, Business Owner Unite2Build and board member Network of Women Engineers

16.30 o'clock Pitches by Jutta Arens, Marlou Bergboer, Carla Kamphuis and Marielle Stoelinga

17.30 hrs Sandwich buffet in the restaurant

18.15 h Workshop 'Negotiation Skills' by Aldis Sigurdardottir

19.45 hours Closing with a drink

This event is organised by KIVI Students Twente in cooperation with KIVI Network Female Engineers. Made possible by a contribution from Novel-T, The Chain Company, ASML and Shell.

ENGLISH announcement: WOMEN IN SCIENCE - Inspiration for your career!

How do other female engineers shape their careers and how do they realise their plans? Do you want to hear inspiring stories about getting a job after your studies? Do you want to discuss with other ladies about how it is to work in the world of science and do you want to follow a nice practical workshop about this? Then you may not miss Women in Science at the10th of March!

Three successful ladies will give their vision on realizing successes and career plans in this traditional 'man world':

- Prof Dr ing Jutta Arens, professor in Biomedical Engineering at University of Twente.

Consciously breathe in and out one time. This is exactly what you unconsciously do about 20,000 times a day to supply your body with oxygen. In some cases, however, various illnesses and diseases can interfere with the pulmonary gas exchange in the lungs and thus become a life-threatening problem. If medical treatment, drug therapy, and artificial respiration cannot help, artificial lungs can be used as an intensive care treatment.

The development of such artificial lungs and other organ support systems into a realistic organ replacement is a dedicated research focus of Jutta Arens, a professor in biomedical engineering at University Twente. Jutta works together with partners from the medical, natural, and engineering sciences to address the diverse issues that arise from artificial organs in contact with blood. The researcher combines engineering and medicine to the benefit of patients and contributes her knowledge on a national and international level to develop standards for testing and approving artificial organs in order to ensure patient safety. Jutta studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University in Germany, did her PhD in Aachen and has recently swapped her job as acting head of the Department of Cardiovascular Engineering at RWTH Aachen University for her Chair in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Twente, Netherlands. In her free time, she likes to take deep breaths while enjoying long-distance hikes.

-Marlou Bergboer, Business Opportunity Manager and Capital Planning Team Lead at Shell
