Excursion to Belgium
On 20 and 21 September 2023, KIVI Nuclear Technology Section and the NNS/DYG are organising an excursion to some very interesting nuclear facilities and sites in Belgium. The programme is as follows.
Wednesday 20 September:
9:30 am - 12:30 pm Visit to Tabloo the visitor centre on radioactivity.
This centre explains all kinds of aspects of radioactivity and also discusses the plans for final disposal of radioactive waste in Belgium. See www.tabloo.com for more information.
12:30 - 13:30 Lunch in the Bistroo
13:00 - 16:00 Visit to ESV EURIDICE including the HADES laboratory.
At EURIDICE, research is done on the storage of radioactive waste in clay layers and HADES is the underground laboratory (250 m deep in the clay layer). See www.euridice.be for more information.
After the visit, we will dine at Corsendonk Priory in Oud Turnhout; a beautiful old monastery, in the countryside with excellent cuisine. We will also spend the night there. See https://corsendonkhote ls.com/location/priorij-corsendonk/ for more information.
Thursday 21 September:
10:00 - 16:00 Visit to the SCK-CEN facility in Mol (including lunch).
We will have presentations there in the morning on, among other things, the activities of SCK-CEN and possible Belgian-Dutch nuclear cooperation.
After lunch, we will visit the LHMA (Laboratory for High and Medium Activity) where research is being done on damage and ageing of materials due to radiation and we will visit a laboratory where research is being done on lead/bismuth cooling to support the MYRRHA reactor to be built and research on SMRs cooled with this medium. See www.sckcen.be for more information.
The cost associated with this visit is €125 per person (including overnight stay, dinner and two lunches). Participants must provide their own transport. The locations to be visited are all in the Dessel/Mol area.
Participation in this visit is only possible for KIVI and NNS members. The maximum number of participants is 30 and registration is possible until 14 May. Cancellation after registration is not possible due to time needed for safety screening by the Belgian authorities.
Registration can be done via the KIVI website.
Kind regards,
Board of KIVI Nuclear Engineering and NNS/DYG
