Historical Radioactive Waste in the Netherlands
Webinar Historical Radioactive Waste in the Netherlands
Activities generating radioactive waste have been taking place at the Petten research site since 1960. That waste has always been stored and registered according to the standards in force at the time. When the current COVRA facilities were completed from the 1990s onwards, much of the waste stored at Petten was disposed of, but intermediate-level radioactive waste and various special types of radioactive waste remained behind. Plans have been made since the beginning of this century to dispose of this so-called historical radioactive waste as well. However, this appears to be a complex problem that, partly due to the now stricter regulations surrounding radioactive waste, is not easy to solve. The disposal of historical radioactive waste from Petten to COVRA in Zeeland really took off in 2018. Over the past three years, hundreds of kegs of low-level radioactive waste have been disposed of. The complex and costly operation is expected to be completed by 2026.
The webinar will update you on the project, common problems and solutions found.
