Historical Radioactive Waste Netherlands (postponed due to coronavirus)
On behalf of the board of KIVI Nuclear Engineering and NNS, we invite you to a symposium on Historical Radioactive Waste.
Activities that generate radioactive waste have been taking place at the Petten research site since 1960. That waste has always been stored and registered according to the standards in force at the time. When the current COVRA facilities were completed from the 1990s onwards, much of the waste stored at Petten was disposed of, but intermediate-level waste and some special types of radioactive waste remained behind
Plans have been made since the beginning of this century to dispose of this so-called historical radioactive waste as well. However, this appears to be a complex problem that is not easy to solve due to the now much stricter regulations surrounding radioactive waste. The disposal of historical radioactive waste from Petten to COVRA in Zeeland really took off in 2018. Over the past two years, hundreds of kegs of low-level radioactive waste have been disposed of. The complex and costly operation is expected to be completed by 2026.
The symposium will update you on the the project, common problems and solutions found.
