Description

KIVI Nuclear Engineering/NNS is organising the symposium 'Small modular reactors (SMR), a new perspective for nuclear energy?' on Friday afternoon 20 April next.

The following speakers will make presentations on this afternoon:

1. Introduction SMR - Ferry Roelofs (NRG)

Ir. Roelofs will give an introduction in which various definitions of SMRs will be presented.
An overview will also be given of several ongoing initiatives worldwide and economic considerations will be explained.

2. Licensing of LWR-SMR - Anne Krüssenberg (GRS)

The safety systems for accident situations at small-scale light water reactors (SMRs) can be substantially different from large-scale nuclear reactors because there is less heat to be dissipated. Dr Krüssenberg will explain the specific technical aspects that could make the licensing process of an SMR significantly different from that for a large-scale nuclear reactor, such as, for example, the reactors currently under construction in Finland and France.

3. SMRs in the UK - Rob Arnold (Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy)

The UK's existing reactor park is nearing the end of its useful life. For its replacement, the UK has decided to embrace the option of nuclear power. This will benefit both the domestic manufacturing industry, eventually create export opportunities for UK companies and help achieve the country's climate goals. Dr Arnold will explain the expected contribution of SMRs in this perspective.

4. Advances in SMR - Sara Bortot (Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan Stockholm)

SMRs do not only include light water reactors. Other types of reactors can also be considered SMRs. These types of advanced reactors have their own advantages and disadvantages. Using an example, the listener will be taken through the considerations and financial perspective of such advanced designs.

Members of KIVI Nuclear Engineering, patrons of NNS and patrons of Kernvisie are invited to attend the symposium free of charge.
