Introduction to Huisman special
Description
Subsea 7 came to Huisman for two very special pipeline systems. At Huisman's insistence, IHC Merwede designed a ship around them. A close collaboration with the ship's designers, IHC Merwede, resulted in two high-tech dedicated vessels, which are among the world's best.
The Seven Oceans has a reel-lay system on board. Here, steel pipelines with a maximum diameter of 400 mm (plus a coating of 100 mm) welded together ashore are coiled onto a large 'bobbin' and uncoiled at sea at a speed of up to 50 km per day to a depth of 3 000 metres. The bobbin is the largest in the world, with an outer diameter of 28 metres, a weight of 900 tonnes and a payload of 3,500 tonnes.
Sister ship the Seven Seas was initially designed first to lay flexible oil pipelines on the seabed. The ship is therefore equipped with two below-deck chocks with a payload capacity of 1250 tonnes each for pipes with a maximum diameter of 600 mm. In addition, the system is capable of laying pipelines with loose pipe section using the J-Lay method. The system is also suitable to be fitted with a Reel-Lay module for unwinding steel pipe at a later stage.
