Prelude FLNG
KIVI members were spoiled by Shell with unique presentation of Prelude FLNG
However curiously interested engineers have shown themselves in Shell's Prelude Floating LNG project in recent years, the oil company has hardly been tempted to release technical details until now.
The Offshore Engineering and Oil and Gas Technology departments, in joint venture, had once again recorded a presentation on Prelude as a topic for the current 2017-2018 lecture season.
On 15 February 2018, 120 interested people who had registered with the two departments were welcomed at the Shell office in Rijswijk.
The visitors were looking forward to a presentation of a technically sophisticated project. In their hearts, many had possibly reconciled themselves in advance to the idea that Shell might not be able to show the back of their minds regarding the technical solutions chosen. How differently this turned out, however.
The organisers within the boards of the two KIVI sections (some of whom were themselves employed by Shell) had managed to ensure that the presentations did show interesting technical details, on the condition that no photographs would be taken or otherwise published about what was shown.
By establishing a live streaming connection with the Prelude FLNG, attendees were able to enjoy a duo presentation of material shown from Rijswijk (by Mr Marcel Veen and Mr Bert Benckhuijsen) and from the ship (by Willem Keij, who had got up in the middle of the night to do so to bridge the time difference between Australia and his audience in the Netherlands).
To top it all off, visitors were treated to a live tour on board, via a webcam on Willem's helmet.
These are the events for which every engineer's heart beats faster.
Thanks to KIVI for organising and facilitating this unique lecture and, of course, to Shell for its hospitable reception and "candid" presentation.
