Ripe for demolition
Description
Many production platforms in the North Sea are at the end of their technical lifespan. Heerema Marine Contractors is decommissioning the large North West Hutton platform on behalf of BP. After an extensive test and investigation phase, the first phase, the removal of the "topsides", has been completed. The second phase, the removal of the "jacket", will follow in summer 2009.
After the dismantling of the Frigg complex, the dismantling of North West Hutton is the second major deconstruction of a production platform. North West Hutton is located in the northern part of the North Sea 130 km northeast of the Shetland Islands. This lecture will discuss the
organisational and technical challenges that were overcome during the removal of the topsides. Interestingly, very different aspects come into play when removing a platform compared to the installation of modules on platforms.
In addition to removing the topsides, underwater inspections of the jacket as well as the removal of secondary steel on the jacket have also started. This requires cutting steel underwater. The sea at the site is 144 m deep. This presents a number of problems and challenges that need to be overcome. Highly specialised cutting tools are needed to get this done. Finally, we will also discuss how the experience gained will be used for the Ekofisk EPRD project. That is a new project for Heerema involving the removal of 9 large platforms between 2009 and 2013.
