SZERSZYNSKI MAIN SPEAKER DURING THE VAN RIESSEN MEMORIAL LECTURE 2008

On Thursday 22 May, the Van Riessen
Memorial Lecture 2008 will be held at Delft University of Technology. This is in memory of professor Henk van Riessen, who died in 2000
, one of the founders of reformational philosophy of technology. Main speaker during this afternoon will be Dr Bronislaw Szerszynski from Lancaster University (GB). The event is organised by the Foundation for Reformational Philosophy with the cooperation of KIVI NIRIA, the Royal Institute of Engineers.

The first Van Riessen Memorial Lecture was given in 2006, then by Dr Carl Mitcham, a well-known American philosopher of engineering. For the second Van Riessen lecture, Dr Bronislav Szerszynki was prepared to act as speaker. Szerszynski's work is at the intersection of (technological) philosophy, sociology and theology. His best-known book, Nature, Technology and the Sacred was published by Blackwell in 2005. In this book, he argues that the 'sacred' plays an important role in both secular and religious thinking about technology. In this, his view resembles that of Van Riessen, who, as a Reformation philosopher of technology, has shown that technical developments
are somehow always driven by beliefs. Szerszynski shows how this is expressed, among other things, in the pursuit of perfection that characterises many technological
developments. In his Van Riessen lecture (in English), Szerszynski will elaborate on the concept of 'the sacred' and show what role it plays in technology.
