Ethics of the Energy Transition
Description
The Board of the Philosophy & Engineering Department has the pleasure of inviting you to the lecture by Koen Straver MSc and Renee Kooger MSc on 14 March next. On this evening, two ECN staff members will draw attention to the "ethics of energy transition" project. This lecture was originally scheduled for 15 November but could not take place then due to personal circumstances of the speakers.
Summary of the lectures:
As part of MVI 2016, the consortium of the 'Ethics of Energy Transition project' consisting of ECN, Milieudefensie, Alliander and Tertium is carrying out a booster study to put the discussion on ethics of energy transition on the map in the Netherlands. Will the energy transition lead to new or different forms of social inequality? Who will be the winners and losers in 2035? And what choices, trade-offs and opportunities will present themselves in the coming years to influence this? This project aims not only to make the social impact of technological developments visible, but also to start an ethical discussion about it.
About the speakers:
Koen Straver MSc works as a social psychologist at ECN. In recent years, he has led projects with themes such as energy poverty, the ethics of energy transition, and mapping solutions for making citizens' behaviour more sustainable. He is also currently working on a project for the VNG 'realisation of energy transition for households with a narrow budget' involving best practices and workshops with, among others, 16 municipalities. In the field of smart grids and the publication acceptance of various energy technologies, he has participated in national and international studies.
Renee Kooger MSc is an all-round consultant at ECN Policy Studies. She combines her dual background in journalism and environmental science in structuring and translating substantively complex material into clear and appealing policy advice. She also specialises in setting up, conducting and analysing in-depth interviews with a wide variety of stakeholders. Her current portfolio includes projects related to the ethics of the energy transition, the role of hydrogen in the future and several transport issues. Renee holds an MSc in environmental sciences from VU University Amsterdam, and a bachelor's degree in journalism from Utrecht University. She is also an expert in debate and persuasion techniques.
