Description

Thinking about the social stay of technology, Rathenau Institute lecture II by Dr Barend van der Meulen, Head of the Science System Assessment Department, title: Technology as a new science.

Technology is not just application, but increasingly science. This has implications for our thinking about what science is and how technology and society relate to each other. Science increasingly legitimises itself through possible technological applications while the value of technology is no longer directly visible

Barend van der Meulen has worked at the Rathenau Institute since October 2008. He researches the dynamics of science and science policy and instruments for science policy. His publications include on the Dutch science system, Europeanisation, research evaluation, foresight and research funding. His current research at the Rathenau Institute focuses on

- internationalisation of science and science policy. Key themes therein are Europeanisation of science (and the development of the European Research Area), international research programmes and the influence of international regimes on local research management.

- evaluation of research and in particular the question of how social returns from research can be evaluated.
