Description

Tbs is a hot topic in the public and political debate. Incidents with (former) inmates have led to calls for stricter supervision of (former) inmates, but also to pleas for a more objective determination of recidivism risk. Some forensic psychologists and psychiatrists argue for further development of measuring instruments; others point mainly to risks of such a 'measuring is knowing' approach. Whereas the former advocate an 'evidence-based' approach, the others advocate a so-called 'hermeneutic-individualising' approach. Using a Kafkaesque case study of a tbs detainee, I will discuss some of these arguments for and against the use of risk assessment instruments.
