The social robot is coming!
Description
The film I, Robot begins with a fascinating scene. The camera slowly zooms in on a busy shopping street in Chicago in the year 2035. And slowly you realise that robots are walking among the shoppers. They are white humanoid robots performing public services. These intelligent machines seem totally integrated into society. They are trusted. These robots are not only smart and handy, they are moral machines... And then, of course, suddenly something goes badly wrong.
By now, the idea that robots will perform useful services in all sorts of places in our society is no longer science fiction. Robots, in particular, have greatly changed the production of goods and thus factory work in recent decades. Automation is no longer limited to production processes. We will increasingly automate household, entertainment, transport, caring for others and warfare. There is no doubt that this new robot revolution will have a major impact on our society. But how far are we willing to go in automating our care for children and the elderly, killing terrorists or making love? In doing so, are we not putting people and our humanity out of business? The lecture takes a socially engaged but also down-to-earth look at the new robotics. Which robot technologies are coming? What are they capable of? And what ethical and regulatory questions do they raise?
