The KIVI Department of Risk Management and Engineering has the honour to invite you to a mini-symposium:

The history of safety science

This topic will be covered in three sessions. The first two through lectures by

  1. Prof. Dr. Jop Groeneweg and
  2. Prof Dr John Stoop
Both professors with a track record who describe from their own knowledge, experience and lifeworld how safety science was raised to a higher level.

Safety science is a relatively young science. The subject has various origins: it originated as a result of the Social Question at the end of the 19th century, in which efforts were made from various angles to improve occupational safety by reducing the number of accidents and occupational diseases. From transport and infrastructure, accident research and design improvements flourished, based on catastrophic accidents and disaster management. We are privileged to be able to invite two (emeritus) professors, who each want to give a lecture on this dialectic of our field from their own knowledge, experience and vision.
  3. The third part of the symposium will be an open discussion led by Prof Dr G Reniers in which, through an empirical dialogue, differences will be pointed out and/or reduced. The end result is not fixed!

The history of safety science

This topic will be addressed in three sessions, the first two through lectures by:

  1. Prof. Dr. Jop Groeneweg and
  2. Prof. Dr. John Stoop
Both professors with a distinguished career, who will describe from their own knowledge, experience, and worldview how safety science was elevated to a higher level.

Safety science is a relatively young discipline. It has various origins: it emerged in response to the Social Question in the late 19th century, where efforts were made from different perspectives to improve workplace safety by reducing the number of accidents and occupational diseases. From transport and infrastructure, accident investigation and design improvements flourished, driven by catastrophic accidents and disaster response. We are privileged to invite two (emeritus) professors, each of whom will give a lecture from their own knowledge, experience, and perspective on this dialectic in our field.
  3. The third part of the symposium will be an open discussion led by Prof. Dr. ir. G. Reniers, in which differences will be identified and/or minimized through an empirical dialogue. The final outcome is not predetermined!

Symposium schedule

16:00-16:30Arrival and registration
16:30-17:15Lecture by Prof. Dr. Jop Groeneweg
17:15-18:00Lecture by Prof. Dr. John Stoop
