Description

Experts in the field agree that adequate communication and provision of information are integral components of effective risk management.

Particularly when communicating to the "general public" or "the interested citizen", it is often difficult to present the available information in such a way that it meets the (especially initially) sometimes rather diffuse information needs. If such information is initially received as satisfying the information need, this does not mean that with it the risks themselves are acceptable, or that the meaning of residual risks is clear.

Using the provision of information around the risks of Groningen's natural gas production as a "case of reference", ir. Rob Geerts (AVIV / Adviseurs voor externe veiligheid) has studied, lectured and published on the tension between assigning meaning to risk information, and the different perspectives and viewpoints that information providers and receivers will inevitably have in doing so.
In this meeting, Rob Geerts will elaborate on this problem definition.

In the ensuing discussion, in preparation for the afternoon symposium of the Risk Management and Technology Department, thoughts will be exchanged on the relevance of Communication and Information within the symposium theme: Innovation, risk management and regulation.

Finally, a brief discussion will take place on the desirability and possibility of developing a well-defined conceptual framework regarding risks
