The 4-quadrant model from knowledge theory classifies knowledge along the axes known-unknown and conscious-unconscious. A classification that gained particular notoriety when Donald Rumsfeld, the then US defence secretary, talked about the 'known-knowns' and 'known-unknowns' of the risks of the Iraq invasion.

On 9 March, the RBT A&O working group is organising a workshop to explore the usefulness of this model for risk management. Participants will be asked to assess past incidents and assign them to one of the quadrants. The aim is to identify common characteristics on the basis of the choices made and motivations used, which will help gain more insight into possible white and blind spots in risk management.

About a week before the workshop, participants will receive the cases and the introduction/guideline "Which risk in which quadrant?" for preparation.
