On the recommendation of the board of the Risk Management and Engineering Section, the Main Board of the Royal Institute of Engineers has appointed Ing Jan Meissen as Member of Merit of the Risk Management and Engineering Section for his outstanding merits for this section and for KIVI in general.

Jan Meissen joined KIVI on 01-05-1988. He was chairman of the Risk Management and Engineering Section from 09-10-2013 (founding meeting) until 09-09-2021. He was chairman of the South Holland-South Region from 14-05-2008 to 07-12-2017. He was a member of the Council of Members from 01-01-2008 to 08-12-2014.

Jan Meissen has made meritorious contributions to KIVI in numerous ways. His particular merit is that he has had the insight that special and more attention should be paid by KIVI to risk management in engineering. For years, Jan Meissen has been working to establish a separate department to study that aspect of engineering in particular, and to provide a platform where all engineering disciplines can learn from and benefit from each other's insights in the field of risk management.

On 24 June 2013, the KIVI Members' Council agreed to the establishment of the new KIVI Department of Risk Management and Engineering, after which the kick-off meeting, also the first general members' meeting, took place on 9 October 2013, at which Jan Meissen was elected chairman of the Risk Management and Engineering Department. Through his personal commitment, knowledge, network and organisational talents, and where required perseverance, he has grown the department from nothing to what it is today: a broad-based department with a substantial membership.

From Jan Meissen, the slogan "It's about the engineer's responsibility". He led meetings with enthusiasm. Jan Meissen consciously preached risk management in practice. Without Jan Meissen, the Risk Management and Engineering Department would never have come into being.
