Description

Coolrec specialises in recycling metal and plastic combinations, including from electrical appliances and ICT equipment. Coolrec processed nearly 1 million refrigerators, 0.7 million televisions and nearly 30,000 tonnes of small household appliances and power tools in 2012. The old, discarded appliances provided new raw materials such as iron, plastic, aluminium and copper. Indeed, white and brown goods consist of high-quality materials that are excellent for reuse as raw materials. Natural materials can thus remain in the environment.

The Dordrecht site processes discarded refrigerators, freezers and large white goods
Coolrec sells the raw materials (former waste products) to companies throughout Europe. Via intermediate suppliers, raw materials such as plastic, copper, aluminium and iron end up at steel mills, copper and aluminium smelters or car manufacturers. And so the metal in refrigerators is used again as metal in cars. By recycling around 1 million refrigerators each year, Coolrec prevents more than 150,000 kg of harmful propellants (including CFCs) from entering the environment, among other things. That is equivalent to the emission of about 1 million ktonnes of CO2 equivalents per year.

The afternoon will start with a lecture on the circular economy and the role waste plays in it.
Coolrec will then explain its activities on site
After a visit to the plant, in small groups, the CO2 avoided in the chain will be discussed through short presentations. Future technical improvements in the processing of electrical and electronic waste are explained.
