GRI guidelines and CO2 performance ladder
Description
Is it good that the GRI guidelines and the CO2 performance ladder are there and what is the consequence for business and especially SMEs?
Is this more administration or still a method to distinguish between the better and the good companies?
Tenders are increasingly making this explicit consideration.
How can you respond to this as an SME?
And what is the role of the engineer in this situation?
The GRI stands for a voluntary report on a company's efforts to work sustainably. See also www.globalreporting.org.
The CO2 performance ladder gives a company the option of certification, which allows the company to demonstrate that it is making continuous efforts to reduce CO2 in its operations and products. Also, in tenders, the certificate can offer a notional discount on the contract price, increasing competitiveness.
Although both systems are not legal guidelines and rely on voluntary application by the business community, SMEs will also be increasingly confronted with this when tendering for work, and not only for work in the public sector.
The challenge for the engineer is how to respond to this.
Large companies and contractors already apply one or both of these systems, and in addition to ProRail, the government will increasingly take into account the extent to which these systems are applied in their tenders, including by their subcontractors.
So it does make a difference whether the subcontractors and sub-suppliers, i.e. SMEs, also work with these systems.
After a brief explanation by Ms Marjolein Baghuis of GRI on the GRI guidelines and Mr Sible Schöne of SKAO on the CO2 performance ladder, Ms Henriëtte Former of DHV and Mr Leon Urlings of Van Gansewinkel Groep will talk about their practical experiences with both systems.
This will be followed by a discussion led by Henk Nieboer, managing director Witteveen + Bos and also chief executive officer of KIVI NIRIA, with participants from the audience and the panel.
The introductions will include the following topics:
- Good that the GRI guidelines and the CO2 performance ladder and are there, and what is their social significance?
- Where are good experiences with them currently being gained?
- What are the potentials for the near future, e.g. government tenders?
- What are the pitfalls now and which ones do we expect in the near future, such as no distinguishing capacity in the long run and lack of alternative methods/systems
