KIVI Tour: Highly technical landscape still deserves natural character
Bus tour with presentation and lecture on landscape development around Haarlem, Schiphol and Amsterdam in the past, present and future. with its contributions to climate transition, quality of life and sustainability through huge transitions described by engineers.
Date: Friday 12 April 2024
Time: 11.00 - 19.30 (for participants in part 2 only, the time is 17.00 - 19.00)
Gathering, departure and return point bus tour: Bus station Aalsmeer. The bus station is easily accessible from Amsterdam Arena train stations, directly by line bus 171 and also via Schiphol and Hoofddorp train stations with several direct line buses
Those coming by car can park it for free at 'In den Ossewaerd' next to Vuurlijn 50 1424NS in de Kwakel, from where the bus departs for bus station Aalsmeer at 10.45.
Organised by KIVI Department of Sustainable Technology (DT)
By learning from history, we can address climate and ecology issues through sustainable green planting and clean green energy solutions, among others.
The bus tour
The KIVI Department of Sustainable Technology will take you on tour to get inspiration on the role of effective green space as landscaping for the near future. You will be pointed out interesting developments during the bus tour via screen and commentary. We will show how our recent ancestors, with limited resources, muscle and shovel, transitioned our landscape back then. What was green is sometimes blue (Westeinderplassen) and what was blue is now green (Haarlemmermeerpolder). Looking back on a green-blue history literally under the smoke of Schiphol Airport, with extraordinary highlights, provides ideas for innovation and replacing fossil energy with green energy. Green blue represents reclamation, peat excavation, forestry and nearby replacement fossil energy with an efficient production process at the Breakneck. We also show how peat replacement is produced in a modern way at this biomass yard. The route (see appendix 2) also takes in line dykes of the Stelling van Amsterdam, which was built between 1910-1920 as Amsterdam's defence line whereby Amsterdam could be isolated from the outside world in times of war all around, with contiguous water features as temporary buffer zones.
We also let our eye fall from the landscape to rare architecture and technology, such as the KIVI-adopted steam pumping station Cruquius, which we visit inside and start the powerful steam boiler, the church buildings by architect Cuypers and an unusual Water Tower next to Westeinderplassen.
In doing so, we show how Schiphol Airport has been given a prominent role in the landscape with a specific runway system , the MH17 monument and spotter's spots.
The bus tour ends at
where we will continue the programme!
Presentation new green space ""Sustainable Performance Green""
Here we look back on the bus tour and then there will be a presentation on intended performance greenery and the implementation specifications of construction, maintenance and harvesting of this performance greenery. Also discussed is the tenfold contribution to continuous improvement towards an increasingly sustainable Earth. Specifications describe how, under different conditions and at different locations, a modern green space can be realised that contributes very strongly to a more sustainable Earth and the phasing out of fossil fuels.
The sustainable performance greenery and implementation specifications are scientifically based and practically proven innovative circular methods for greenery. It explains the core qualities of this green provision that positively distinguish it from the usual green provisions in the Netherlands. This innovative green space has many advantages including significant CO2 capture, biodiversity enhancement, nitrogen capture, soil improvement, production of green hydrogen and improvement of the living environment and reduced (traffic) casualties.
The development of sustainable performance greenery has now reached the stage where substantial upscaling is possible. It also indicates the contribution it can make to the 2030 Climate Plan. The attached figure schematically shows the contributions of performance greenery as a sustainable green space.
To conclude, there will be a Walking Dinner of 1.5 hours, during which you will be served all sorts of things.
The cost of the Walking Dinner is included in the participant fee.

Appendix 1: Accessibility bus station Aalsmeer
The bus station Aalsmeer is located at the bus lane along the N 196, locally known as the Burgemeester Kasteleinweg, just east of the roundabout intersecting with the Zwarteweg (the tour bus starts at 10.45 from parking opposite Vuurlijn 50 1424 NS de Kwakel for motorists and 11.30 from bus station Aalsmeer, for public transport guests and possibly cars.
Below are the line routes that pass the Aalsmeer bus station along N196. From several train stations such as Amsterdam Arena, Hoofddorp, Schiphol and Stations Amsterdam Centraal and Zuid, you can take bus lines 171 et al to Aalsmeer, where the tour bus for the KIVI Tour will be waiting for you from 11.00 am and depart at 11.30 am. Of course, you can also come by car and park near the Ossewaerd Vuurlijn 50.
The bus tour will be followed in den Ossewaerd by a presentation on sustainable greenery and the Walking Dinner after which you will be taken back to the bus station by the tour bus.
