Sustainable wind energy in the North Sea
Description
The use of fossil fuels creates emissions of CO2, causing global warming and changing our climate. To counter this, the Netherlands is switching in phases to clean energy from wind, solar and geothermal sources. This transition includes the expansion of wind farms in the North Sea.
One of the projects that will be realised is the realisation of four wind farms in the Borssele wind energy area. These will be built and commissioned in phases during 2019-2020. A total capacity of 1400 MW will be installed in this area.
The electrical energy generated must be transported to the mainland. Landfall will take place at the transformer station near Borssele. This requires transformer stations, sea cables, high-voltage lines and control stations. Public company Tennet is constructing this grid.
Because this is an extensive project that will run over several years and has various stages, the department of Sustainable Technology, together with Rijkswaterstaat Zee en Delta, is going to organise four meetings in the period 2018 - 2021. The first meeting will involve a presentation on the preparatory process from policy proposal to the start of construction of a wind farm and the connection to the high-voltage grid.
The presentation of the preparatory process will include the following topics: Spatial planning, permits, objectives, national policy, expected yields, emission reduction, regulation, effects and mitigation.
The second activity is a company visit to SIF, the manufacturer of heavy foundations for off-shore applications.
This is followed by a meeting on the technical and economic maintenance of a wind farm. The fourth meeting will focus on evaluation and revenues of the Borssele wind farms.
Parking is available at the Qpark P+R site behind Middelburg NS railway station.
