Description

Are sustainably and socially responsible produced chicken eggs affordable?

The Environmental Technology/Food & Green department of KIVI NIRIA is organising a visit to a modern farm with laying hens in the context of one of its main themes, "De boer op, moderne land- en tuinbouw en voedsel".

On 10 May 2012, members of the Environmental Technology/Food & Green department will be welcomed by poultry farmer Mr Brandsen at his farm with laying hens. These laying hens scratch in a so-called Rondeel chicken house, a concept that has sustainability - which includes animal-friendly production of consumption eggs, food safety , minimal environmental impact, etc. - , and corporate social responsibility as starting points. An economically sound cost price and a very short route to the consumer are also part of the overall concept.

The following topics will be discussed:

- A brief history of the housing of laying hens in the period 1950 to 2010, current modern house and future houses.
- Animal care principles and requirements, new stables, plant cultivation in relation to feed for laying hens, medication of laying hens, pesticides in the cultivation of plants used to produce chicken feed, monitoring and control.
- Social expectations and public opinion on agriculture and horticulture and food safety. Company size, mega-stalls and livelihoods.
- Responsible handling of animals such as animal housing, care for animals, fire safety and signalling/alarm systems of stables etc.
- Role of government, n.g.o's, consumers, supermarket chains, agricultural organisations and Legislation and Regulations.
- Role and development of education and training: primary schools, secondary schools, H.B.O, universities, the media, etc.
- Relation with environment (emissions, manure, size of stables, etc.)
- Cost transition to the future production of chicken eggs in a sustainable and socially responsible way and the expected developments of the price of eggs for consumers.
- The whole is supported with photos, diagrams, tables and graphs.

In short, in 3 hours your picture of chicken egg production and marketing will be integrally completed, updated and given horizon
