Description

In the Netherlands, communication with stakeholders about projects, which may have significant impact on people, the environment and/or landscape, is in many cases difficult. The communication often leads to positions being taken by supporters and opponents, who then dare not go back on their opinions because they will lose face. Communication then takes place on an emotional level and no longer on a rational level.

Numerous examples were given in recent years:
* the placing of windmills on land,
* the use of nuclear energy,
* natural gas drilling and production in the Wadden Sea,
* and quite recently the CO2 storage under Barendrecht.

The aim of this meeting is to discuss, on the basis of examples such as those given above, how this communication can be improved. Expert and inspiring speakers will give their views. To this end, a number of people, who have been involved in a number of such projects, have been asked to act as moderators during this meeting. In the interests of constructive discussion, some demarcation is necessary. The main focus will be on communication with interest groups by the energy sector regarding its projects with an impact on people, the environment and/or the landscape.

Discussion

For inspiration and to already give the discussion some direction, the following questions will be addressed:
- Stakeholder scepticism towards assertion of the energy sector regarding its projects;
- Are stakeholders a priori sceptical when it comes to projects from the energy sector?
- What is this scepticism based on?
o Does the energy sector often make claims that are not true?
o Do stakeholders feel that projects from the energy sector will be implemented anyway and is there therefore a calimero effect.
- How should the energy sector communicate with its stakeholders?
- Should the energy sector differentiate its communication strategy according to the type of stakeholder it deals with (environmental movement or local residents)
