5G is the latest generation of mobile communications and is the successor to 4G. 5G is much faster, can send much more data, is more reliable and also provides longer battery life. Thanks to these advantages, a lot of new applications are possible. Municipalities play an important role in the rollout of the new mobile network. Besides being a point of contact for residents and organisations, they also consult with telecom providers on the placement of new antennas. In a series of master classes, under the theme smart cities and communities, employees of municipalities, provinces and governments are updated on a specific topic by an expert. The first 5G masterclass in this series on local antenna policy.

The masterclass gave an overview of '5G regulations' and looks ahead to the implementation of the European Telecom Code (small cells, shared use of public infrastructure). The Antenna Bureau, hosted by Radiocommunications Agency, is the central government's information agency on antennas & technology, regulation, safety and health. Louwrens Wemekamp is an advisor at the Antennebureau and supports municipalities, institutions and individuals with questions about national and local antenna policy, from C2000 to 5G.

Series 5G Masterclass: smart cities and communities
The 5G Masterclass is an initiative of 5Groningen, a programme of the Economic Board Groningen (EBG), together with the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen.
For the smart cities and communities series, there is collaboration with the Association of Groningen Municipalities (VGG), Association of Frisian Municipalities (VFG) and Association of Drenthe Municipalities (VDG). It is an educational, interactive event that takes place once a month. Each Masterclass has a 5G-related topic, which is specifically intended for employees of municipalities, provinces and governments. The sessions are introduced by experts from top players in the telecom world such as KPN, Vodafone, Ericsson, Huawei, Agentschap Telecom and TNO. There will then be room for questions and substantive discussion.
