5G Masterclass - The impact of 5G
The 5G Masterclass ' The impact of 5G' took place on 17 November. Four speakers from TNO told us more about the technical possibilities of the 5G network and they showed a number of concrete applications that TNO has developed with partners over the past year. On this page, you can watch the video of the 5G Masterclass and download the powerpoint presentation.
The aim of this masterclass was to encourage interested parties, companies and organisations to think about what 5G could mean and then to enter into a dialogue with TNO and 5Groningen about this and to explore how these opportunities and possibilities can be realised.
Speakers 17 November
- Adrian Pais, Senior telecom consultant and project manager for TNO's stake in 5Groningen.
- Matthijs Vonder, Senior research scientist at TNO with a focus on 5G for agriculture and healthcare.
- Lucia D'Acunto, Senior research scientist at TNO with a focus on 5G for the (media) industry.

About the 5G Masterclass
The 5G Masterclass is an initiative of 5Groningen, a programme of the Economic Board Groningen (EBG), together with the University of Groningen and Hanze University Groningen. It is an educational, interactive event that takes place once a month. Each Masterclass has a 5G-related topic. The classes are introduced by experts from top players in the telecom world such as KPN, Vodafone, Ericsson, Huawei and TNO. Afterwards, there is room for questions and substantive discussion.
There will be an online 5G Masterclass on Tuesday 17 November. The 5G communication network is going to have a major impact on our society. The next generation of mobile technology is now well known and will radically change the way we interact with each other. Communication will become smarter, technology-neutral, more environmentally friendly and offer incredible bandwidth. TNO has built up a lot of knowledge and experience with this new technology in recent years. A number of new applications have also now been developed and tested.
Online 5G Masterclass
Due to the corona virus, the 5G Masterclass will not take place physically, but we will organise an online version on Tuesday 17 November from 16:00 - 17:15. Once you have registered, you will receive a web link from us where you can follow the online 5G Masterclass.
The impact of 5G
The benefits of 5G form the basis of applications and services we can start exploring for consumers or entrepreneurs in the coming period. The Internet of Things connects smart homes and makes residents' lives more enjoyable. Machine-to-machine communication makes offices, facilities and appliances smarter and more productive. Mobile applications will enable the healthcare of the future to treat patients based on individual needs. Smart energy networks will transform consumers from energy users to producers. And self-driving vehicles from modern automobiles will produce fewer traffic jams and reduce road casualties. Furthermore, the rise of Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality communications - accelerated by the need for interactive and efficient remote collaboration due to the COVID-19 pandemic - will place huge demands on (mobile) network connectivity, especially when considering bandwidth, latency and synchronisation. But other sectors will also benefit from the superfast data connections of 5G to connect large numbers of devices quickly and without delay, with lower energy consumption and better security.
TNO now wants to share the accumulated knowledge and experience with a number of 5G applications with interested parties, potential users and the market. In this way, we hope to engage with companies and organisations to explore possible new applications together. To start this knowledge sharing, we are organising a 5Groningen masterclass on 17 November, where we will discuss the technical possibilities of the 5G network and then present a number of concrete applications that we have developed with partners over the past year.
The ultimate goal of the masterclass is to stimulate interested parties, companies and organisations to think about what 5G could mean and then to enter into a dialogue with TNO and 5Groningen about this and explore how these opportunities and possibilities can be realised.
