Fixed Wireless Access
"Everything is reachable!"
The opening of the FWA meeting is performed by KIVI Telecommunications Department vice-president Huib Ekkelenkamp.
Armando Voets then went on to introduce the theme "Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)" and the stated goal: "Everything is reachable", which was explained in more detail.
Anne van Otteloo's talk analysed the definition of the term "FWA" and correctly described the FWA definition, this clarified what is and what is not meant by "FWA".
The sheet with the "Overview of Fixed Wireless Access" indicates that various technologies can be deployed, which depend on the character of the service area, such as urban areas (>100Mb/s) or outdoor areas (<100Mb/s). It also shows that various radio-technical solutions are possible and applicable. In practice, these technologies turn out to be complementary.
Anne van Otterloo shows how Nokia has developed three business scenarios for this: "Connect the unconnected", "Build with precision" and "Wireless fibre". These 3 scenarios are explained on the basis of frequency usage, the physical output ring of the network and the choice of the right antennas for optimal performance and speed of the internet connection. The internet connection is set up from the fixed network infrastructure (fibre, coax, or copper) and goes through a high point (building, tower, etc.) with a targeted wireless connection to users in the outlying area or rural areas.
The presentation by Jeroen Thijsen Huawei revealed, that Huwei has developed the "Customer-premises equipment (CPE)" for this purpose with "Wireless to the x (WTTx) and uses the advance wireless broadband (WBB) principle for internet connections, through an existing mobile operator, This solution is widely deployed in vast sparsely populated countries, where a fixed network infrastructure is very limited and an extensive mobile network is also operational.
Mr Bart Heinink (Greenet.nl) says that based on the landscape, the setup for internet connections is made, which is commercially viable and several networks, such as in Zeeland, are operational, After an increase in the number of users, the fixed network infrastructure is extended and the user's wireless connection is converted into a fixed internet connection after some time.

Description
The Telecommunications Department invites you to the lecture evening with the theme:
"Fixed Wireless Access (FWA): Everything is reachable"
The global demand for household broadband connections has been growing markedly for several years. The mobile broadband market is significantly larger than the fixed one: 5.2 billion versus 970 million subscriptions respectively in 2017. However, this growth is expected to slow as existing technologies struggle to reach an increasing number of households economically.
Often, fixed broadband options - DSL, cable or fibre alternatives - are limited in rural areas. Here in the Netherlands some rural areas, but on a global scale we are talking about hundreds of millions of households deprived of a good possibility to be connected to the rest of the world.
A common credo in this regard is "Connect the unconnected". Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) provides that alternative for those potential customers. The household has an almost normal modem/router, with an outside antenna if necessary, but does not use fibre or VDSL to access the internet, but instead uses the mobile network with techniques such as HSPA, LTE and 5G New Radio (NR).
All kinds of interesting telecom issues arise here:
- Should FWA traffic and normal MBB traffic be separated?
- How to deal with peak usage?
- Can I offer Quality of Service to customers? Is IPTV possible?
- What kind of service do I offer: Maximum number of gigabits per month or MB/s as guaranteed speed?
- When will it become more profitable to roll out fibre?
The technology and the market are developing rapidly, but are still in the early stages. The next phase is all the more interesting as FWA will merge with 5G in the future. A world of possibilities.
All the more reason now to have experts in this field talk about their experience so far and go into this evolutionary step towards 5G. Huawei and Nokia from a vendor perspective, Veon on the other hand will talk about its use in countries such as Kazakhstan and Georgia. Greenet a little closer, namely in Zeeland and the Flevopolder.
A fascinating spectacle, innovative topic. Come all!
