Description

Visit to the Amsterdam Internet Exchange and the Computer Museum of the University of Amsterdam.

Only 30 KIVI NIRIA members will have the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of the Amsterdam Internet Exchange. This excursion will be combined with a visit to the Computer Museum of the University of Amsterdam. Optionally, you can attend the General Members' Meeting of the Telecommunications Department.

The Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) is one of the largest internet hubs in the world. More than 100 Petabytes of data are exchanged here every month. A Petabyte corresponds to one thousand Terabytes or one million Gigabytes. Because this quantity is beyond imagination, Wikipedia comes up with a comparison: "A 1.8-kilometre-high tower of stacked CD-ROM discs without a box". This staggering amount is exchanged at an average speed of over 560 Gigabytes per second.

The Technical Director of AMS-IX talks about the origins and development of the Internet exchange. He will also explain the technology used, power supply and protection of data flows. All this while walking between the switches that deliver this exceptional performance, at the NIKHEF data centre in Amsterdam.

The Computer Museum of the University of Amsterdam gives an overview of the origins of the computer age. The collection includes mechanical precursors of the computer, punch cards as the first storage medium and room-filling computers from the 1960s and 1970s. And they still work! The curator gives us a unique tour and demonstrations.

The day is complete thanks to drinks and dinner at a nearby restaurant. For those interested, the day will end with the General Assembly of the Telecommunications Department. You will be given an insight into the financial reporting and a hint will be given about the planned activities for 2009 and 2010. You will also have the opportunity to offer your suggestions for fun activities of the Telecommunications Department.
