A surfeit of uniques: Zutphen's maintenance workshop
Maintenance workshop Strukton Rail Equipment Zutphen
In Zutphen, the maintenance workshop handles various equipment. Besides Strukton Rail's own contractor equipment (tamping machines, chainhorns, ballast finishing machines, locomotives, etc.), equipment from other carriers is also handled: Arriva has part of its fleet there and Eurailscout - the railway measurement company owned 50% by Strukton Rail and 50% by SNCF - has its range of measurement trains serviced there. The old workshop, which was practically on the river IJssel a stone's throw from the station, has since been demolished and sacrificed to urban expansion.
That did give the opportunity to build a new, spacious workshop that meets today's requirements, and to bring in Arriva as a co-tenant. They will explain their maintenance philosophy and how it differs from unicaten
While we still have winters, the maintenance of contractor equipment and gauge trains is notoriously seasonal with a big peak in winter.
This means that during the winter months, everyone wants their pet piece of equipment inside for maximum care, because working in and on the track is a wear and tear.
And every piece of equipment is almost guaranteed to be a one-off, with different parts and different concerns.
