Developments in Utrecht: DSSU and OVT
Description
ProRail is developing a totally new Utrecht Central Station, with a much larger station and completely modified track layout. This is being done together with many other parties.
Under the name "Doorstroomstation Utrecht" (DSSU), the railway infrastructure will be adapted in such a way that train services will interfere much less with each other in the future.
There will be corridor-based platform use and the tracks and points for train flows will be separated as much as possible.
In order to accommodate the much larger flows of passengers in pre- and on-carriage, with frequent transfers between trains and buses and trams, Utrecht Central Station will be converted into a totally revamped "Openbaar Vervoer Terminal" (OVT).
On the website of these projects:
The new public transport terminal will soon provide sufficient space for the increasing number of passengers. The spacious station hall will be doubled in size, platforms will be widened and there will be an extra eighth platform.
The expected growth in the number of train passengers and carrier NS' desire to have a train running every 10 minutes on busy routes in the future make a complete renewal of the tracks around Utrecht Centraal necessary. Laying the tracks in more straight tracks will allow a smoother flow of more trains. The renewal of the yard thus leads to a more reliable train service in and around Utrecht. From now on, disruptions to the railway infrastructure can be limited as much as possible to 1 route, affecting fewer passengers.
Programme
You will first be received by the project manager Jaap Balkenende. He will provide an outline explanation of the projects.
Afterwards, Niek van Deelen and colleague, the Rail Systems Engineers, will provide a further expert explanation of both projects. They will discuss the basic principles and backgrounds as well as the design and system choices. There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion.
Next, the construction sites will be visited. Safety clothing will be provided for this purpose.
NB. Please note that this excursion does not include a meal.
The number of participants is limited to 25 at a time, due to the visit of the construction sites.
Given the expected interest, this excursion will be organised twice, on two different days: on Thursday 16 April and Tuesday 21 April 2015.
The excursions will be guided by Frank Bokhorst, chairman KIVI Platform Railsystemen.
