10 years of Sustainable Safety and now what?
Description
The Sustainable Safety vision aims to prevent accidents and, where this is not yet possible, to virtually eliminate the risk of serious injury. People with their limitations are the starting point. The Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management and decentralised authorities signed the Covenant on the Start-up Programme Sustainable Safety at the end of 1997 and implemented the intended measures on a large scale from 1998 onwards. More than ten years after the adoption of this Start-up Programme, SWOV has taken stock. In the period 1998-2007, many measures were taken, especially in the field of infrastructure (e.g. construction of 30 and 60 km/h roads, roundabouts) and traffic enforcement combined with education. Implementation of Sustainable Safety so far can be called successful, partly because the ministry, police, justice department, municipalities, provinces and water boards have taken a pro-active approach.
The question arises whether Sustainable Safety has had its day or whether it is time for a new impulse. During the evening, first a picture will be painted of the effects of more than 10 years of Sustainable Safety, after which two speakers will argue for a new impulse or for shifting the focus to Shared Space. Fred Wegman will then present his views on road safety. No doubt these presentations will provide plenty of material for discussion
