Bike accessibility: the housing challenge in Enschede

The Netherlands is facing a huge housing challenge. To keep our cities liveable and accessible during this urban densification, a shift in our mobility is crucial. After all, less space for cars and lower parking standards mean more space for housing, greenery and liveability. As a result, cycling is no longer just a mode of transport, but an indispensable key in tackling the housing crisis.

Enschede is one of the frontrunners in the Netherlands in this field. On Wednesday 1 April, KIVI Traffic and Transport would like to take you on an interactive and inspiring cycling excursion through the city. We will look at how Enschede uses its high 'cycling ambitions' to solve the city's spatial puzzle.

During the excursion, we will cycle past and discuss, among other things:

  • The Spoorzone and Kennispark: How do you facilitate thousands of new homes and workplaces on these development sites, without clogging up the road network?
  • The F35 cycle highway: We experience this crucial artery that serves as a mobility backbone for the new housing locations.
  • Innovative infrastructure: From smart bicycle parking facilities to innovative practical applications based on (cycling) data.

During this cycling excursion, Benjamin Groenewolt (policy advisor mobility at the municipality of Enschede) and Alex van Gent (advisor sustainable mobility at Arcadis) will tell you about their work in an (inter)active way. They will take you through the opportunities and challenges of realising cycling projects in the midst of a growing city.
