Discussion meeting CityCargo
Description
Many urban areas have problems with local air pollution (including particulate matter and nitrogen oxides), which is partly caused by traffic. In addition, intensive urban traffic contributes to the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In many urban areas in Europe, measures have been and are being taken to reduce pollution, which often amounts to banning older vehicles from city centres. Many of these measures focus on urban goods distribution.
In Amsterdam, too, this issue is an issue and an "environmental zone" is being developed from which a category of polluting (diesel) vehicles should be excluded. The Air Quality Action Plan also includes an initiative by a group of private individuals and companies to run a large part of urban goods distribution by tram. Inspired by freight transport by tram elsewhere, CityCargo has drawn up a plan to tranship goods at sites near the A10 ring road, from where further distribution will be by freight tram and small electric vehicles.
