Dynamic route navigation
Description
WHAT ADVANTAGES DYNAMIC ROUTE NAVIGATION PROVIDES FOR ROAD USERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT?
CAN CONGESTION BE PREVENTED?
The number of road vehicles with on-board navigation systems is steadily increasing. The quality of route advice is highly dependent on the accuracy and timeliness of the underlying digital maps and available information on current traffic intensities and speeds per route. Update of map material and traffic information is therefore crucial. The market leader of navigation systems in Europe TOMTOM aims to acquire digital map supplier Tele Atlas for €2.9 billion to strengthen its development capacity, product family and market position. Can the new generation of dynamic route navigation systems fulfil its objective of plotting the smartest routes for every user within seconds and predicting a reliable journey time? Is it possible to bypass traffic jams with these on-board devices and improve traffic flow?
During the discussion session, four speakers will address the state of development of driving task support systems in general and dynamic route navigation systems in particular. Among other things, Tom Alkim (DVS) will elaborate on the results of a recent trial of sustainable route navigation in Japan, while Ben Rutten (TOMTOM) puts user requirements at the heart of product development by the supplier. Hans van Lint (TU Delft) will then talk about the feasibility of perfect travel (time) information in highly congested traffic networks, and Isabel Wilmink (TNO) will discuss the effects of navigation system use on driver behaviour and the environment. Finally, the speakers will enter into a discussion with each other and the audience in order to clarify the added value and limitations of these ICT systems.
