The Simulation on Rail meeting was held at ProRail in Utrecht on 24 November 2010.

Description

Following two previous lectures on simulation tools in the rail sector by DHV, Arcadis and Movares, a third and final lecture in this series is now provided by ProRail.

In the development of the railway network, simulation plays an increasing role in various planning and analysis processes.
To develop and quality-assess future timetable, infrastructure and control variants, ProRail applies a number of advanced simulation models.

Various models will be discussed at the meeting and demos will be available:
DONS - development of national timetables and routing at stations
SIMONE - timetable assessment at (national) network level
FRISO - timetable assessment at local (corridor, sub-network) level
SITA - bottleneck analysis running flows

Application of simulation requires adequate tools and deployment of specialists, neither of which are widely available.
Topic of the final discussion is how the rail sector can try to avoid fragmentation of knowledge and tools
