Description

Every year, the Knowledge Institute for Mobility Policy (KiM) of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment publishes the Mobility Balance (from 2014 Mobility Assessment), providing an overview of the state of mobility in the Netherlands. In recent years, a stabilisation of car mobility can be observed. Since 2005, domestic automobility growth has been levelling off. After decades of impetuous growth, this is a significant break in the trend. This fuels all kinds of speculation. About the cause and whether the break in the trend is permanent. Factors include the current economic crisis, changing preferences of young people, (spatial) shifts in activity patterns, the rise of flexible working and the internet society with teleshopping. At this meeting, Jan van der Waard will give you the latest insights into trends in mobility and the main underlying factors. Peter Jorritsma will elaborate on the development of car mobility among young adults (18-29 years old). Friso Metz will attempt to interpret developments 'from below' that are not visible in KiM's macro explorations. These are changes related to the rise of the internet society and changing social norms. The lectures will provide plenty of material for discussion with which the programme will conclude.
