Day trip to the Port of Duisburg
Description
Over the past year, visits to Keyrail at the Kijfhoek yard and the ECT Euromax Terminal have given us an insight into the current state of affairs regarding the handling of cargo flows through Dutch ports and transport systems.
Following on from this, we will now visit a major transport hub in the hinterland of the Netherlands, namely the Port of Duisburg.
Located at the point where Ruhr and Rhine merge and in one of Europe's most important industrial regions, Duisburg has become Europe's largest inland port.
There had been a port here as early as 1716, and the port, founded in 1926 as Duisburg-Ruhrorter Häfen AG, focused mainly on the transshipment of raw materials and products from the Ruhr area's iron and steel industry. This was later joined by the transhipment of crude oil and oil products for the Ruhr refineries.
Nowadays, the Duisburger Hafen AG is an important distribution point for container flows via 7 multi-modal container terminals, but the transhipment and storage of bulk goods (especially imported coal), steel products, scrap metal, petroleum products and chemical products are still important activities. From and to water, road and rail connections, transhipment of over 80 million tonnes of goods per year is achieved.
There are close links and collaborations between the Duisburger Hafen and North Sea ports, such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Vlissingen and Antwerp.
We will make the trip to Duisburg together by bus. The bus will depart from the Transferium Rotterdam Capelse Brug. Subscribers from Central, Southern and Eastern Netherlands can board near Boxmeer/Beugen. Details of departure and boarding locations can be found under "Programme".
During the bus trip, some films will be shown with presentations of Duisburg and the Duisburg Hafen.
Upon arrival in Duisburg, we will first visit a modern multi-modal container terminal in the new port area on the left bank of the Rhine accompanied by a representative of the Duisburger Hafen and then go to the bulk terminals in the old port area on the right bank.
After these two terminal visits, we will take a port tour that will provide further insight into the nature and scope of this city and its port. Various cold and hot food and drinks can be consumed on board (at your own expense).
At the end of the tour, we will undertake the return trip to the Netherlands
