Description
The European Bulk Handling Company (EMO) B.V. is the largest dry bulk terminal in Europe with an annual throughput of 35 million tonnes.
EMO specialises in the transshipment of iron ore and coal for steel and energy industries. These substances are brought in by large bulk carriers as far as Cape Size from all over the world.
Seagoing vessels are unloaded at 4 berths on the Mississippihaven using 5 unloading bridges with a lifting capacity of 50t or 85t. The latter unloading bridges have the largest lifting capacity in the world.
An area of 160 ha is available for bulk storage with a storage capacity of 7 million tonnes. Here, storage and disposal is provided by 7 stacker/reclaimers.
Transit to the hinterland is mainly by barge and train. For inland shipping, 4 berths on the Hartelhaven with 3 barge loaders are available. Train loading is done with the help of 3 wagon loaders.
Furthermore, transit to other seaports is possible using a seagoing barge loader at a berth on the Amazonehaven where Panamax Size ships can be received.
EMO is currently engaged in a major expansion programme including a new 85 t unloading bridge, a stacker/reclaimer, a new barge loader, a new train loader and a revamped control room. At the time of our visit, the new construction of all these installations, except the 85t unloading bridge, will be completed.
During the visit, we will, among other things, discuss these new construction projects in detail.
During the subsequent tour of the terminal site, we will also get a good impression of this impressive bulk terminal in its new size. Due to safety requirements, this tour will be conducted by bus. The bus will depart from the P+R car park Capelse Brug (Abram van Rijckevorselplein 46, 3065 SM, Rotterdam), accessible from the A-16 via the Capelle a/d IJssel exit. We will therefore gather here at 14.45 at the latest. Due to limited parking facilities at EMO, in principle one cannot go there with one's own car
