Description

The Department of Transport Engineering of the Royal Institute of Engineers (now KIVI NIRIA) was founded in 1973. So this year, our department is celebrating its 40th anniversary!
This 8th lustrum coincides with the opening up of the largest port project in the world today, namely the expansion of the Rotterdam port on Maasvlakte 2.

Given the importance of the Maasvlakte 2 project for the Dutch economy and the major role that the Rotterdam port as well as the Dutch transport and logistics engineering practice plays in it, KIVI NIRIA Transportkunde & Logistiek has decided to celebrate its lustrum in the form of a festive and informative boat trip on Maasvlakte 2.

Last November, the dike between Yangtzehaven and the Maasvlakte 2 ports was breached, making Maasvlakte 2 accessible by water via the existing Maasvlaktehaven basins. This connection will then be officially opened to shipping on 22 May 2013.

In consultation with the Port of Rotterdam Authority, it was possible to arrange for our lustrum boat trip to take place as early as one week after the official opening, on 29 May 2013. We therefore have an absolute first as the Department of Transport Engineering and Logistics! The boat trip will be carried out with the "Henry Hudson", a beautiful and comfortable boat of shipping company Spido with a splendid view all around.

The programme will start at the Educative Information Centre Mainport Rotterdam (EIC) in Rozenburg, where introductions will be given by René van der Plas, project director Maasvlakte 2 of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, and Prof. Dr Gabriel Lodewijks of TU Delft. Ample parking is available at the EIC.

After the introductions, boarding will take place in the Henry Hudson via EIC's jetty on the Nieuwe Waterweg. From there, the boat will sail to the Maasvlakte and conduct an extensive tour of Maasvlakte 2 and adjacent ports. During the cruise, expert explanations with lots of inside information will be given by Port Authority staff.

After visiting Maasvlakte 2, a delicious hot and cold buffet dinner will be enjoyed on board. Finally, the boat will sail back to the EIC

The provisional programme is as follows:
14.00 - 14.30 Reception at the Educational Information Centre Mainport Rotterdam, Noordzeeweg 6, 3181 ML Rozenburg
14.30 - 15.30 Introductions
15.30 - 16.00 Embarkation in Henry Hudson
16.00 - 19.30 hrs Sail to Maasvlakte 2, round trip on MV2, sightseeing of other port areas and return trip to EIC.

Registrants will receive the final programme and other necessary information in good time.

After registration, you will receive a confirmation thereof and are requested to transfer your contribution immediately. The Henry Hudson is a large tour boat, but there is of course a limit to the capacity for passengers on board. Therefore, there are also limits on the number of registrants, both students and non-students. When these limits are reached, further registrants are notified and placed on the waiting list. As soon as a place becomes available, the first awaiting participant will be placed on the list of participants, will be notified and must then transfer their contribution.
